The Basics of Bowling Ball Specs
Every bowling ball has its fundamental specifications. These specs, which are specified on the ball box, indicate where the performance of the ball maximizes on a lane. There are three main layouts that can be mentioned, but actually, there are much more detailed layouts. However, to avoid being overly verbose, we will primarily discuss these three here.
Firstly, we have the ‘Pin Up’. This layout creates the most active skid or backend motion in basic patterns, including house patterns. Secondly, there is the ‘Pin Down’ drilling, where the pin goes under the ring finger. This layout allows for easy ball control and is optimal for long patterns. Lastly, there is the ‘Pin Inside’ drilling, which fairly combines the properties of the previous two and has relatively high destructive power.
Matching Layouts with Bowling Styles
Depending on the bowler’s style, the Pin Down can be advantageous for fast bowlers as the hook tends to occur relatively early. On the other hand, for slow speed bowlers experiencing rollout, it is recommended to use the Pin Up layout. Of course, the advantageous style varies depending on the amount, pattern, and thickness of the oil, so it is advisable to utilize both Pin Up and Pin Down.
The Pin Inside is a layout with a core angle of about 45 degrees and is a drilling method that all bowlers can handle without any trouble. Regardless of the skill level, it is the most preferred drilling method as it provides good ball movement and pin action.
The Importance of Communication in Choosing Layouts
The most important aspect of layouts is the communication between the bowler and the driller. It is crucial for the bowler to consult with the driller if they feel that ‘the ball should break at a certain point’ or ‘the ball seems to release too early.’ Through this, the bowling ball can operate correctly according to the bowler’s intentions and skills.
